    Scanner Install Issue

I am up-grading a 4 yr old home built machine to x64. I have installed the 64 bit OS on a new HDD and kept the old Xp OS intact on the orginal drive so I have an option to run either OS.

I am having an issue getting my scanner to run on the x64 OS. It's an HP Scanjet 4670. Hp has x64 drivers which I downloaded and installed without issues. Hp does not support this scanner with software for x-64 but indicates it will run with the built in scanner software called WIA (Windows Imaging Acquisition).

The device manager shows the scanner is installed and working properply. However, when I open WIA, I get a pop-up saying "The computer cannot detect the scanner or camera. Please make sure the device is turned on and is properly connected to the computer."

When I open Scanners and Cameras from the Control Panel, I see the scanner is installed, but when I click on scan, I get: "The scanning software could not be found, or your scanner is not connected. Please make sure your scanner and scanning software are properly installed."

Hp support has not been much help. I have uninstalled/installed the drivers mutipul times per their instructions. I have been giving conflecting directions from Hp concerning Scanner software and have installed it a couple of times and uninstalled as many per their instructions. The driver download from Hp is called Basic Software and I believe is all that is required.

The scanner works fine as installed on the 32 bit OS so I am sure this is not a hardware issue.

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Re: Scanner Install Issue

It looks like HP has posted a basic driver for your scanner, here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?os=2030&softwareitem=sj-47456-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=303641.  This is no doubt what you've already tried installing.  The driver description page says this:

This is the minimum driver required for basic WIA functionality. This driver enables scanning with the Windows Photo Gallery on Windows Vista or the Scanner and Camera Wizard on Windows XP. Scanning can also be done with a variety of 3rd party scanner enabled applications

Therefore, no matter what HP tells you, you *need* this installed.  I'm thinking that somehow your device isn't being properly installed when you install the drivers, and that you manually need to do it.  After you install the above driver, check out Device Manager.  Are there any Unknown Devices?  Are there any devices with a yellow exclimation point?

    Thanks for your help!

The link on your post is the link that I am using. My device manager indicants all hwd is installed correctly. I have uninstalled other hwd that  I thought might be causeing conflict such as the web camera and the Hp printer. Both are still uninstalled. This made no difference.

Do you know what drivers should be listed under driver details? Hp support does not respond to this question. I am somewhat confused about where my drivers are actually loading from. The Hp download you posted is an application file that says it installed drivers and the scanner is ready to use, but the driver details in the devise magager indicate the drivers are Microsoft and I saw that they loaded from a Microsoft up-date folder. Does this make sense? When I ask Hp support this question, they tell me to uninstall and reinstall. How would I manually install the drivers?

    Thanks again for you help!
