Sad [:(] Hibernation Tab Missing in Power Option Properties

    I'm running XP Pro x64 Version 2003 SP2 with 8GB RAM and (2) AMD Opteron 280 Processors.

I just recently purchased a UPS and need to enable hibernation to protect my data during a extended power outage.

My problem is that when I go to the Power Option Properties, there is no Hibernation Tab available.

    Any ideas?

What motherboard do you have?  Try reinstalling your chipset drivers.

My motherboard is a TYAN Thunder K8WE (S2895).

I did reinstall the latest version of the chipset drivers and still no hibernation tab in the Power Options.

I've done some research on this and there seems to be an issue with running more than 4GB of RAM and using hibernation.  I have 8GB of RAM and two AMD Opteron 280 Dual-Core Processors installed.

This is an interesting issue.  I've never tried using hibernate on a machine with >4gb of ram.

Off the top of my head, I would make sure that you have at least 8gb available on your Windows drive, as the hibernation file is going to be 8gb large.

I would also open up command prompt, and execute this command, "powercfg  /hibernate on" (without the quotes).  After running it, check to see if you can select hibernate in power options.

Let me know if that helps!

    Hi Dirrad

I can confirm that with 8 GB of ram there isn't a hibernate option.  I have my own theory why it doesn't work, although I could be totally wrong :)

It looks like restoring from hibernation doesn't actually execute the commands to switch the processor to 64bit mode till after the image is read from the hard drive.  Since the switch commands aren't run till after reading the system is unable to allocate more than a theoretical max of (2^32 -1) bytes which is roughly 4GB.  Thus it could not map the upper 4GB of the ram and thus render the system unusable.

Am I wrong, possibly; could it be other things, possibly (I have SATA RAID); but the theory makes sense and prevents unusable systems.

from above messages , i understand that you are Using Windows Os with more than 3 Gb of Ram - in such cases- you must be using using /pae switch in boot.ini file. hence hibernate shall not be activated with /pae switch. hth Sushil Kumar Mudaliar

No - I don't think so.  You don't need /PAE switch for a 64bits OS.  Only in 32 bits OS /PAE is required to address more than 3+GB RAM.
