a way to run 32 bit programs on 64 bit?

is there a way to run 32 bit compatible programs on a 64bit system? I saw a tab in control panel that said 32 bit settings. I want to run Rhapsody (since I pay for it!) but we just got a new computer (HP quadcore with vista 64bit) and rhapsody is only compatible with 32 bit system. Any ideas?

Just joined surprised no one has taken a few seconds to respond to this so far. Vista 64 runs 32bit apps fine. instead of installing it in the Program Files x64 folder it installs in the normal program files folder. The programs are just not coded to take advantage of 64bit/HT. Should be no problems.

Actually, that isn't entirely right.  There is no 'Program Files x64' folder.  By default, there are two program files folders, 'Program Files' and 'Program Files (x86)'.  By default, 32-bit applications will install to 'Program Files (x86)', and 64-bit applications will install to 'Program Files'.

As for the original poster, as of 6/17/2008, Rhapsody now supports Windows x64.  You can obtain the latest version here: http://www.rhapsody.com/-software

Re: a way to run 32 bit programs on 64 bit?

I have a question: I have a computer that opens the internet explorer installed into the 32 bit directory instead of running the one from the 64 bit directory. How should I change this option?

You don't really want to do this, and there is no way to in XP or Vista x64.

The reason is, there is no widespread support for 64-bit browser plugins.  For example, there is no x64 Adobe Flash.  When you are in 64-bit IE, all Flash content will not work.

Just jumping in to be sure before I bail on my attempts to install XP Pro on this 64 bit. I have 4 gig of memory and 250 HD. When I tried to install it all it said was cannot find hard drive. Can this be done?

it sounds like you are trying to install it on a sata controler you will need to find out what controler it is and download the drivers for that controler and upon windows setup you need to f6 to install drivers and have it on a floppy so windows can find the new drivers ..then it should see your hard drive!

is there a way to run 32 bit programs like flash on my 64 bit vista? I have read many confusing blogs about Linus, Gnash, Swiftfox, ect and I am concerned that I will cause my system to crash if I"m not computer saavy and try to download something to run flash and others

Generally, if your 32 bits program don't do ANYTHING funny (like checking for memory addresses, etc), 64bits VISTA will handle 32 bits programs for you.  You don't have to worry about that.  There is a very high compatibility for most modern Windows 32bits programs under 64bits VISTA.  Device drivers are the exception - all device drivers MUST be 64 bits under 64bits VISTA.

Re: a way to run 32 bit programs on 64 bit?

I get the following error when I download a software program:

The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running.  Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.

    Does anyone know a workaround?

    Thanks,

What program is that  - that you are trying to download?  AND what operating system is it?  XP 64 or VISTA 64?

The first program is Juniper Networks VPN software, the second is an equipment selection software specific to Aaon air handlers.  The OS is Vista Ultimate 64.

Can you check if the programs are actually 16 bits programs instead of 32 bits?  If they are 16 bits, then hard-luck - as VISTA or XP 64 don't support 16 bits programs.

Re: a way to run 32 bit programs on 64 bit?

Is there a way to run 32bit compatible program on 64bit Vista? I have a game software BICYCLE SOLITAIRE developed by SFFTE INTERNATIONAL, which was working with my old sony laptop running Vista 32bit. But I cant run this program on my new Sony VISTA64bit

the version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you are running. Chick your computers information to see whether you need an x86(32bit) or x64 (64bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher

History : This Game is in a folder that contains some files (.exe, .dll, .GID, .bsg, .bsi etc) all I just have to do, open the exe file, the Game Will work

In my New Laptop VISTA 64bit, I saw an option when i did right click on that exe file > properties >COMAPTIBILITY tab > Run this program in compatibitility mode for (windows XP service Pack2, window 2003..... etc)

is there a way I can play this Game ?

(the existing game i got as a gift from ma freind) I m ready to buy the latest software if support 64bit. is the 64bit version of this software available any where?

BICYCLE SOLITAIRE Windows Series SWFTE INTERNATIONAL LTD Version 3.22

It looks like Bicycle Solitaire is from around 1991 - which would mean that is a 16-bit application, and not a 32-bit application. Windows x64 does not support 16-bit applications, sorry. The only way to get that to work would be to install a Virtual Machine of a 32-bit Windows version, and you could run it in the VM.
