    Angry [:@] pfc.sys error!

When playing WoW, Guild Wars, the Sims2, and other such games, my computer tends to freeze up. Not just the program, but the entire system. When I check the error logs for time of crash, this is what I see:
\SystemRoot\SysWow64\drivers\pfc.sys has been blocked from loading due to incompatibility with this system. Please contact your software vendor for a compatible version of the driver.
This error is reported 3 or 4 times in about 1 second. There was also the same error with a different .sys, which I got rid of by uninstalling iTunes.

So the question is: what is pfc.sys a component of? I read not to up and delete it, as my optical drive will go with, so what SHOULD I do instead?

    Re: pfc.sys error!

This gets installed on my system when I install the nVidia Pure Video Decoder to watch DVD's via Windows Media Player.  I believe it also gets installed with Power DVD and maybe others.  I do know once installed you cannot delete file from your system or remove the entries to it in the regestry or you will loose your CD/DVD drives from your systems Device Manager.  I have found that in no way does this error effect the performance of the decoder.

This error is caused by DEP (Data Execution Prevention). To fix it ...

Right click the My Computer icon, select Properties, in the new dialog, click the Advanced tab, in the Performance group click the Settings button, now click the Data Execution Prevention tab, now select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:, now click the Add button at the bottom and browse to C:\Windows\SysWow64\drivers\pfc.sys (assuming Windows is installed in the Windows folder on your C: drive) and select Open, ensure there is a tick next to the file you just added in the list, then click Apply. Close all open windows and restart your PC, the problem should now be gone. Cool [H]
